Scammers and Gougers
Watch out for scammers and gougers. Would you pay 2,000 for a 400 watt generator? If you had been without power for a week, you may consider it. Would you pay $2,000 for a repair that should only cost $400. Would you know the difference? Price gouging is illegal in most states. Some unscrupulous contractors out there feast on innocent victims in the wake of Hurricane Irene. Reputable contractors have a home improvement, roofing, or other appropriate license from the state. The license number should be displayed on their vehicles, contract and other information you're given. If you feel you're pressured into signing a contract, insist on time for an experienced Maryland Hurricane Damage Attorney to review what you are being asked to sign. Your contractor should be licensed, bonded, insured, and ideally, should be recommended by a friend or trusted acquaintance. Don't pay the entire quote up front. 25% is standard.

Hurrican Irene- Some preliminary numbers
It's far to early to say with any certainty the ultimate dollar value assigned to Irene's wrath. Preliminary estimates range from 3 billion on the low end to 14 billion on the other. 12 deaths have been confirmed.
HURRICANE IRENE- How to handle your property damage claim.
Promptly report the hurricane damage claim. In the immediate aftermath of a hurricane, you may not be able to get through on the phone. Send a letter or an email to your agent. If an insurance company asks you to describe the full extent of the hurricane damage- use this phrase: "AS FAR AS I KNOW AT THIS TIME, THE DAMAGE IS .... HOWEVER I AM NOT A CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONAL. I HAVE NO WAY TO KNOW THE FULL EXTENT OF POSSIBLE DAMAGES. Do not underestimate, or lock yourself in. Do not guess. Early on, you truly have no idea what kind of subsequent problems even a small amount of water intrusion could cause. Structural defects may not be immediately apparent. Wait until you have all the facts. Some individuals choose to consult with a Maryland Hurricane Damage Attorney prior to meeting with adjusters or appraisers.
